Senior Tax Accountant Job Description

Smith Schafer & Associates is currently seeking a dedicated and goal oriented Senior Tax Accountant to take charge in preparing individual and business returns.  A Senior Accountant prepares and reviews complex tax returns and provides coaching and training for entry level accountants and interns. This role will work closely with managers and principals in assisting our clients with tax planning, preparing financial statements, and researching technical tax issues. This person will have the opportunity to organize and manage client assignments and projects, prioritize workflows, and manage multiple deadlines. The person in this role will continue to learn, understand, and effectively use current tax and accounting software applications.

Key Responsibilities of Senior Tax Accountant:

  • Prepares and leads preparation of individual and business tax returns.
  • Completes initial review and prepares complex tax returns.
  • Provides leadership and training for staff and entry level accountants and seasonal interns.
  • Assists with tax planning and lead specific assigned projects.
  • Prepare/reviews compiled financial statements.
  • Works in team environment with principals, managers and staff.
  • Understands and effectively uses current tax and accounting software applications when completing engagements.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Researches technical tax issues.
  • Engages in learning about the Firm’s business development efforts. 
  • Represents the Firm at assigned business and community functions.
  • Participates in professional, charitable, and/or civic organizations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree  in Accounting/Finance or related field
  • 2 years of experience in tax planning, preparation, and tax related projects.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of organization, focus, exceptional attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Accounting/Finance or related field.
  • 3 years of experience in tax planning, preparation, and tax related projects.
  • Experience with ProSystems Tax Preparation software, QuickBooks, and CCH Engagement.
  • Customer-service oriented, demonstrated by the following attributes: proactive, observant, knowledgeable, and reliable.
  • CPA exam passed or on track to complete.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, stand or sit for extended periods of time, as well as type/enter data at a keyboard regularly.

The Tax Accountant is responsible for preparing individual and business tax returns and providing support to senior accountants, supervisors, managers and principals, which includes assisting with tax planning, reviewing, and understanding financial statements, small business accounting, and researching technical tax issues. Job Description

The Senior Auditor is responsible for organizing and managing client assignments and projects.  Assist with planning and facilitating audit engagements and effectively using the Firm’s accounting software applications when completing audit engagements.  This position will learn to facilitate and apply technical skills, learning processes and systems.  This person is expected to execute a solid understanding of accounting and auditing principles, quality control standards and technology implementation procedures relative to individual client assignments.  Works efficiently and is flexible to changing work schedules and hours, and regularly exercises independent judgment and discretion about accounting matters of significance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plans, leads and facilitates engagements for audits to meet budget and client expectations.
  • Contributes to development of new business opportunities by participating in strategic business development initiatives, attending networking and professional development events, and leading educational programs.
  • Evaluates clients’ internal controls and determines the extent of testing required in an audit.
  • Provides exceptional service to clients by providing individual attention, responsiveness and commitment to understanding their goals and needs.
  • Executes solid understanding of accounting and auditing principles, quality control standards and technology implementation procedures relative to individual client assignments.

  • Learns and understands the firm’s financial model and ensure profitable delivery of engagements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of accounting/audit experience.
  • Proficient in Excel and Word.
  • Strong technical, analytical and organizational skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • BA/BS in Accounting/Finance or related field.
  • 3 or more years of similar work experience in a Public Accounting firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists with business development efforts by meeting with prospective clients, preparing quotes and proposals, and evaluating client needs.
  • Develops, builds, and manages prospective and existing client relationships.
  • Be involved in professional and community activities and participate in firm-wide marketing initiatives and efforts.
  • Communicates effectively with existing clients, colleagues, management, and IRS representatives regarding a variety of tax matters.

  • Reviews individual and business tax returns and assists with tax planning.
  • Needs to review and understand the various financial documents and statements from clients.
  • Prepares client billings in a timely manner and follows-up with clients regarding unpaid invoices.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Prepares internal memoranda, written correspondence/guidance, private letter rulings and other documents for submission to the IRS or Treasury Department.
  • Works effectively in a team environment with principals, managers, and staff.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Accounting/Finance or related field.
  • 4 years of similar tax and accounting experience in a CPA firm.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Excel and Word.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of prioritization and exceptional attention to detail.

Preferred qualifications

  • BA/BS in Accounting/Finance or related field.
  • 5 plus years of similar tax and accounting experience in a CPA firm.
  • Experience with ProSystems Tax Preparation software and QuickBooks.
  • CPA exam passed and license is active or actively working toward passing CPA exam.
  • Customer-service oriented, demonstrated by the following attributes: proactive, observant, knowledgeable, and reliable.
