The primary purpose of this position is to prepare tax returns during the “busy season” of Smith, Schafer and Associates, Ltd.

Specific Responsibilities

To prepare and/or assist in preparing simple to complex tax returns for individuals and businesses.

  • Review information provided by clients and interviewers as well as copies of previous tax returns, wage statements from employers, year-end interest and dividend summaries. 
  • Accurately prepare tax return work papers (business returns)

Senior Auditor

Smith Schafer, a multi-office accounting & consulting firm, is seeking a full-time, experienced accountant at a senior level to service the needs in our audit department. The successful candidate in this position will manage audit staff and execute the day-to-day activities of audit and review engagement of various clients, including governmental audits.

Key Responsibilities May Include

  • Plan, lead and facilitate engagements for audits; Direct staff resources to meet the engagement budgets and client expectations.
  • Serve clients in a high impact manner, demonstrating command of their major area of specialization.
  • Demonstrate deep technical skills, general industry knowledge and knowledge of the firm’s capabilities.
  • Review all work papers, reports, financial statement drafts and letters of recommendations to ensure they are prepared in accordance with firm and professional standards.
  • Evaluate clients' internal controls and determine the extent of test-checking required in the audit; supervise testing
  • Strengthen existing client relationships by communicating with them throughout the year and advising on all concerns and relevant industry pronouncements.
  • Develop new business opportunities by participating in strategic business development initiatives, relevant organizations, attending networking and professional development events, and leading educational programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • CPA certification required; 5-7 years of experience working in external audit in public accounting
  • Plan, coordinate and manage audits in compliance with applicable GAAS, GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Prior experience with governmental audits (including single audits)
  • School district auditing is a plus for potential candidates.
  • Familiarity with ProSystem fx Engagement is preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of financial statement preparation, audits, reviews and compilations.
  • Advanced knowledge in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat).
  • Demonstrated track record of developing positive client relationships.

Seasonal Audit Intern/Staff Accountant (Audit)

Smith Schafer & Associates, a multi-office accounting and consulting firm, is seeking a Seasonal Audit Intern to join our team for the 2017 "Busy Season!" This internship will be a full-time, paid position with the job duration running from late January - April, 2017. Selected candidate must be available to work some evenings and Saturday's, if business needs dictate. At Smith Schafer, you will gain the experience and training needed to help you build a successful career in your selected industry. Upon successful completion of the internship, full-time employment opportunities may be available.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Establish working relationships with client personnel.
  • Assist with and accurately perform analytical review of audit documents.
  • Review client accounting and operating procedures and systems of internal control.
  • Assist with and perform substantive tests and tests of internal controls to identify and resolve accounting or reporting issues.
  • Draft financial statements under direction of Manager.
  • Perform office duties as required and assist other staff members in other departments as needed.

    • Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent with some administrative experience; Keen sense of accuracy and attention to detail; Prior experience with office machines including fax, copier/printer/scanner; Ability to work in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment with frequent interruptions.

 

  • FT Seasonal Tax Assembly Individual. Job duration: Late-January thru Mid-April, 2017. Hours: M-F, 8am-5/6pm, with some Saturday’s required.
    • Primary Responsibilities: Provide assistance to the office manager in performing the activities related to assembly of individual tax returns; scan individual documents and insert at appropriate location; retrieve client files and various other administrative duties.
